Top Ten Older Favorites

Top Ten TuesdayTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  Each week there is a new topic and this week’s topic is: Throwback Freebie: Ten Books I Loved During The First Year I Started My Blog, Favorite Books Published 5 or 10 or 15 Years Ago, Ten Older Books I Forgot How Much I Loved, etc. etc. I decided to go with my Top Ten Older Favorites.

In no particular order, these are some of my older favorites, not including the classics. I’ve read each of these books at least twice.  And totally coincidentally, 7 out of the 10 have movie or TV adaptations.

  • Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy – This book is centered around a group of friends in Ireland as they grow up.  I’ve loved this book for so long and it was adapted pretty well into a movie featuring Minnie Driver and Chris O’Donnell.
  • Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris – The first book of the Sookie Stackhouse series that I fell in love with shortly before the TV adaptation, True Blood, aired on HBO.  I binge read as many books of the series that were published at the time.
  • The Bone Collector by Jeffrey Deaver – The first time I read this book, I was with my family at a cabin in northern MN. Let’s just say that it thoroughly creeped me out in the best way possible.  The movie adaptation with Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie was pretty good, but of course the book was much better.
  • Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley – This is a pretty unpopular opinion for fans of Gone With the Wind, but I really loved this sequel. Probably because I love Scarlett and Rhett so much that I couldn’t take them ending the way they did in GWTW. I needed more and that’s what Scarlett gave me.  The TV miniseries adaptation was awful though. Ugh. Timothy Dalton as Rhett….. NO.
  • One by One by Gilbert Morris – This is one my mom and I had checked out from the library a few times because we both enjoyed it so much. The book is out of print but I recently was able to track down a copy on Thrift Books and gave it to my mom for Christmas last year.  Really creepy mystery about people being kidnapped and held hostage in the bottom of a grain silo, as the kidnapper begins to kill them, one by one.

  • The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans – I first read this during my horse obsession phase in early high school. I just really loved everything about this story but especially Pilgrim and Grace’s second chance. I also love the movie adaptation with Robert Redford, Kristen Scott Thomas, Sam O’Neill, and Scarlet Johansson.
  • The Princess by Lori Wick – This book is definitely a fairy tale type story about an average citizen being chosen to become the next princess because the widowed prince needed to re-marry by a certain age according to the law of this fictional country.  It is technically Christian lit but I ignore the religious aspects of it when I read it for the most part.
  • Empire Falls by Richard Russo – I read this book in a college English class called Stories of Place and ended up falling in love with it.  The book centers around the life of Miles Roby who lives in a small blue collar town in Maine but dreams of so much more.  The adaptation featuring Ed Harris, Helen Hunt, Paul Newman, and Robin Wright was pretty good but I definitely prefer the book.
  • Tell Me Your Dreams by Sidney Sheldon – I picked this up on a whim while staying at my grandma’s house one summer a long time ago. I read a lot of Mary Higgins Clark books back then and this seemed to be along a similar vein. Ended up being so much better. The main character turns out to have multiple personality disorder and finds herself on trial for doing something one of her alters did.
  • Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier – This is one of those books that makes me feel instantly cozy which might sound weird considering the subject matter. This story is about a wounded Civil War soldier on his long walk home to his sweetheart back home.  You may have seen the adaptation with Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, and Donald Sutherland.

Top Ten Books I’ve Read So Far In 2017

Top Ten TuesdayTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  Each week there is a new topic and this week’s topic is: Best Books You’ve Read In 2017 So Far.

I have read some pretty great books so far this year!  A few have really stuck with me and have been added to my all-time favorites list.  Here are the top ten books that I have read this year!

  • Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor – I mean, obviously this one is going to be on this list.  I fell so hard for this book!  I loved everything about it and can’t wait to read the sequel next year.
  • Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff – Okay so technically I haven’t even finished this one yet but I’m almost done with it and it is AWESOME! I can’t wait to get my finished copies when it publishes later this year.
  • Dark Matter by Blake Crouch – This book was worth all the hype and more! Masterful writing and so full of suspense.
  • A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab – I finally started this trilogy this year since the final book was releasing.  Such awesome world building and super cool magic system.  The second and third books were completely amazing as well so all around fantastic trilogy.
  • The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon – I really don’t know why I waited so long to read this book.  I was almost immediately hooked on this story and characters.  I’ve read the first three books this year and am dying for the rest of the series to be published.

  • The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden – I got a review copy of this book and ended up loving it way more than I thought I would.  It was such a beautifully written retelling.
  • Goodbye Days by Jeff Zentner – This book wrecked me.  Jeff Zentner is officially on my list of favorite authors after writing my favorite book of 2016 (The Serpent King) and this one.  I can’t wait to see what he brings to the table next.
  • F*ck Love by Tarryn Fisher – This was my first book by Tarryn Fisher and I am so glad I picked it up because I fell in love with this book.  I loved the characters, story, and Harry Potter references.
  • Renegade Red by Lauren Bird Horowitz – This sequel to Shattered Blue was so much more intense!  So much action, twists and turns… And that cliffhanger!  I can’t wait to see how this trilogy wraps up in book 3.
  • A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas – This book was so intense it had me on the edge of my seat nearly 100% of the time AND my Fitbit registered my reading time as active minutes because it had my heart pounding.  I’m sad this portion of the series is over.  I need more Rhysand!

Top Ten Series I’ve Been Meaning To Start

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  Each week there is a new topic and this week’s topic is: Top Ten Series I’ve Been Meaning To Start But Haven’t.

I have so many series that I’ve been wanting to start but haven’t got around to yet.  Some of them are completed and some are still being written.  All of the ones that I chose for this post are series that I own at least the first book.  Click on the photo of book one of each series to be taken to the Goodreads page.

The Lotus War trilogy by Jay Kristoff

I have become a huge fan of his since reading Illuminae and Nevernight last year.  I own the entire trilogy but haven’t picked it up to read yet.  I really need to get on that soon!

Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes

I’ve heard so many good things about this series and it sounds like something that would be absolutely perfect for me. So I own all of the books that have been currently released (1-5).  But of course, I still haven’t started the series yet.  Maybe knowing that the final book comes out later this year will get me moving on it.

The Kingkiller Chronicle series by Patrick Rothfuss

I love adult high fantasy series so this one was a must have for my collection.  I’ve heard great things about it but haven’t been reading as many longer books lately so I’ve been passing this one over for shorter reads.  I’m trying to take an easier go at my reading and not feeling like I need to read a huge number of books per year so that I feel better about taking longer with these bigger books.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy by Laini Taylor

This trilogy has such a huge following that I had to put it on my TBR list.  And I ended up getting the whole set from Book Outlet so now I just need to read it.  I read her other book, Strange the Dreamer, and fell 10000% in love so I really can’t wait to read more of her books.

Starbound trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

I bought the first book after reading Illuminae because I wanted to read more Amie Kaufman.  But alas, it has continued to sit on my shelf unread.  Hopefully knowing they are starting another series together will push me to read this one sooner rather than later.

Worldwalker trilogy by Josephine Angelini

Initially what drew me to this trilogy was the covers.  They’re absolutely gorgeous.  Especially after the redesign.  Ordinarily I’d be a little peeved that my covers don’t match but this one doesn’t bug me so much.

The Diviners series by Libba Bray

I’ve never read any of her books yet but I loved the premise of this series.  Supernatural and the 1920s…. YES PLEASE!  I have had the first book for awhile but haven’t gotten around to reading it.

The Gold Seer trilogy by Rae Carson

Again with the gorgeous covers!! I also love blending fantasy with historical fiction so this seemed like a really great trilogy for me to read.  I own the first two books and the third one comes out this fall so hopefully I can get this trilogy started this year.

Reckoners trilogy by Brandon Sanderson

I became a fan of Brandon Sanderson when he did a fantastic job of finishing Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series after Jordan passed away.  I also read Mistborn and thought it was fantastic so I’m excited to read more of his books.  I have the first two books.

Three Dark Crowns series by Kendare Blake

This was one of my most anticipated books of 2016 but I guess I hyped myself up too much and ended up choosing to not read it yet.  That also happened to me with Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas.  I tend to get overly excited about a book releasing but then not reading it right away when it is released.  I am still very excited to read this one and the second book comes out soon.

What series have you been meaning to start but haven’t yet?

Top Ten Favorite Fandoms

Top Ten TuesdayTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  Each week there is a new topic and this week’s topic is: Fandom Freebie — top ten fandoms I’m in, 10 reasons X fandom is the best, must have merchandise for x fandom, etc. etc.

It’s been quite awhile since I’ve posted for Top Ten Tuesday but I love this topic so I figured I might as well give it a go.  Anybody who knows me well, knows that I can get pretty obsessive about my fandoms.  From collecting merchandise (official or fan created) to making my computer and phone backgrounds pictures from that fandom.  Currently my desktop PC background is a picture of Claire and Jamie Fraser and my phone is the cover image of Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff.  So without further ado… here are my top ten favorite fandoms.

  • Outlander – This one is fairly obvious since I already mentioned that my computer background is a picture of the two main characters.  I have a pretty large collection of Outlander books, jewelry, bookmarks, prints, figures, etc. I have it all on display in our living room.  The first two shelves are the Outlander collection.20170315_144042
  • Gone With the Wind – This is my absolute favorite move of all time and I love the book as well.  I have several different editions of GWTW as well as figurines and multiple collector’s sets of the movies.  The photo below is old and I have since acquired a few other book and movie editions and figurines.Screenshot_20170404-113328
  • Supernatural – I have been watching this show since the very beginning.  I remember falling madly in love with it after the pilot episode and I’ve been obsessed ever since.  I have most of the Funko pops, Supernatural shirts and socks, and even have a body pillow that has Dean on one side and Sam on the other. I have a few of the novelizations, a graphic novel and a couple of other books as well as all of the seasons on bluray.20170315_143626
  • The Light Trilogy by Lauren Bird Horowitz– I am thoroughly obsessed with this series and can’t wait for book 3 to come out!  Check out Shattered Blue and Renegade Red today!
  • Game of Thrones – The show, the books… I need more! I’m trying to wait very patiently for the next book.20170315_143601
  • Lord of the Rings – This was really the series that got me hooked on the fantasy genre.  I’m 100% obsessed (see above picture)
  • The Wheel of Time – In the living room along with my Outlander collection, I have my Wheel of Time collection.  I’ve been into this series since I was 17 years old. For Christmas my hubby got me the poster of the map and I can’t wait to get it framed! 20170315_152356
  • Jay Kristoff – Nevernight/Illuminae – I want to combine these two because they both blew me away and I can’t wait for the rest of the books in each series!  Nevernight was totally badass, dark and twisty.  Illuminae and Gemina were just pure genius on the part of Kristoff and his co-author Amie Kaufman.  17218554_10100269319074803_2467029410219127_o
  • Harry Potter – This one had to be included… Harry Potter has always been a pretty big part of my life beginning with the books and into the movies.  I love both and I love collecting all kinds of items from the fandom for my collection.  The biggest part of my collection is probably my Harry Potter Funkos.  Of the 104 Funko Pops that I own, 30 of them are from the Harry Potter universe.14479564_10100198425830433_8371012248178193601_n.jpg
  • Jane Austen – The first time I saw Jane Austen adaptation I was in elementary school.  In high school I started reading her books and fell in love.  I love all of the books and enjoy watching all of the different adaptations including the more modern retellings such as Bridget Jones and Clueless.  20170315_143726.jpg

  • Colleen Hoover
  • Sarah J. Maas
  • Leigh Bardugo
  • Maggie Stiefvater
  • Disney
