685375Title: Lord John and the Private Matter
Author: Diana Gabaldon
Published: Published September 30th 2003 by Delacorte Press
Length: 305 Pages

Goodreads Summary: In her New York Times bestselling Outlander novels, Diana Gabaldon introduced millions of readers to a dazzling world of history and adventure — a world of vibrant settings and utterly unforgettable characters. Now one of these characters, Major Lord John Grey, opens the door to his own part of this world — eighteenth-century London, a seething anthill of nobility and rabble peopled by soldiers and spies, whores and dukes. Great Britain is battling France for supremacy on three continents — and life is good for a soldier.

The year is 1757. On a clear morning in mid-June, Lord John Grey emerges from London’s Beefsteak Club, his mind in turmoil. A nobleman and a high-ranking officer in His Majesty’s Army, Grey has just witnessed something shocking. But his efforts to avoid a scandal that might destroy his family are interrupted by something still more urgent: the Crown appoints him to investigate the brutal murder of a comrade in arms, who may have been a traitor.

Obliged to pursue two inquiries at once, Major Grey finds himself ensnared in a web of treachery and betrayal that touches every stratum of English society — and threatens all he holds dear. From the bawdy houses of London’s night-world to the stately drawing rooms of the nobility, and from the blood of a murdered corpse to the thundering seas ruled by the majestic fleet of the East India Company, Lord John pursues the elusive trails of a vanishing footman and a woman in green velvet, who may hold the key to everything — or nothing.

The early days of the Seven Years War come brilliantly to life in this historical mystery by an author whose unique and compelling storytelling has engrossed millions of readers worldwide.

How I Got It: I bought it.

When I Got It: I bought it in the spring of 2015.

Why I Want To Read It: It’s a spinoff of the Outlander series featuring Lord John Grey. As you may already know, I am obsessed with Outlander so I want to read everything and anything I can get my hands on that relate to these characters.

12813630Title: The Coldest Girl in Coldtown
Author: Holly Black
Published: September 3rd 2013 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Length: 419 Pages

Goodreads Summary: Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.

One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.

How I Got It: I bought it.

When I Got It: I don’t even remember exactly but it’s been on my TBR for at least 2 years.

Why I Want To Read It: I originally bought it because vampires… but I recently read my first Holly Black book (The Cruel Prince) and loved it so much that I want to read everything that she has ever written.

17261190Title: Stormdancer (The Lotus Wars #1)
Author:
   Jay Kristoff
Published: Published August 21st 2012 by St. Martin’s Griffin
Length: 352 Pages

Goodreads Summary: Stormdancer is the first in the epic new fantasy series The Lotus War, introducing an unforgettable heroine and a stunningly original dystopian steampunk world with a flavor of feudal Japan

The Shima Imperium verges on the brink of environmental collapse; an island nation once rich in tradition and myth, now decimated by clockwork industrialization and the machine-worshipers of the Lotus Guild. When hunters of Shima’s imperial court are charged by their Shōgun to capture a legendary griffin, they fear their lives are over. Any fool knows the beasts have been extinct for more than a century, and the price of failing the Shōgun is death.  Accompanying her father on the Shōgun’s hunt, the girl Yukiko finds herself stranded: a young woman alone in Shima’s last wilderness, with only a furious, crippled griffin for company. Even though she can hear his thoughts, even though she saved his life, all she knows for certain is he’d rather see her dead than help her. But together, the pair will form an indomitable friendship, and rise to challenge the might of an empire.

How I Got It: I bought it.

When I Got It: June 2016 but added to TBR April 2016

Why I Want To Read It: I LOVE Jay Kristoff’s writing and all of his other books so I really wanted to read this trilogy but for whatever reason, I’ve set it off to the side.  My goal is to read it either in February or March.

WOW! It has been a very long time since my last one of these posts! Oops! One of my main goals for the year is to concentrate on my own unread books so I have made a list of my priority TBR which consists of many books that have been untouched for a year or more.

22544764Title: Uprooted
Author:
   Naomi Novik
Published: Published May 19th 2015 by Del Rey
Length: 438 Pages

Goodreads Summary: “Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.

But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.

How I Got It: I bought it.

When I Got It: September 2016 but added to TBR August 2015

Why I Want To Read It: I’ve heard so many good things about this book! I’m a big high fanstasy lover and this one sounds like it is totally up my alley.

27190613Title: And I Darken
Author:
   Kiersten White
Published: Published June 28th 2016 by Delacorte Press
Length: 475 Pages

Goodreads Summary: No one expects a princess to be brutal. And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets.

Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, Radu feels that he’s made a true friend—and Lada wonders if she’s finally found someone worthy of her passion.

But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against—and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point.

How I Got It: I bought it.

When I Got It: Shortly after it’s release when I saw a signed copy at Target.

Why I Want To Read It: I had heard a lot about this book and how dark and twisty it is.  The past year or so I’ve been finding myself drawn more to villainous characters and stories so it sounded like something that I would really like.  I was so excited to read it right away but then it got set off to the side like so many other books I get excited about right away.
