Lately I’ve been looking for a different way to organize my bookshelves. I need to be able to maximize the space but I also like keeping my books by the same author together. Many of those books are in different formats so it doesn’t work very well for maximizing the space. As you can see in the above photo, I have books of all different sizes and it is messy. So I’m looking for some alternative ideas.
Do you have a specific way you organize your bookshelves? By genre? By author? By format (hardcover vs paperback vs mass market paperback)?
Mine is totally idiosyncratic. I group authors together, but aside from that, it’s a free-for-all. I pull them off the shelf too much for me to want to organize them.

I tend to organize by author, but I know your trouble. What I’ve found helpful is placing the books on their sides and stacking upwards–it works best when the largest are on bottom and the smaller on top, because you can stack books vertically on the ledge of space.

I generally try to organize my shelves by genre, then by author though it doesn’t always work, since I’m running out of room. But that’s the general rule for my shelves.

I am completely out of room so I’m trying to see if a different arrangement would create more space. I have all of my authors together but thinking it might be a good idea to start organizing by genre as well.

I think genre works best… Then you can pick what you are in the mood for easily… And if you run out of room on your bookshelf, get some wall shelves for some of your books to cut down the clutter and keep your shelf more visually appealing 🙂

Unfortunately my bookshelf looks a lot like yours. I cannot focus on anything other than book size if I have any hope they will fit
Whenever I do get enough space to sort, I try to have books by the same author together, but I organize first by size and then by title.

I did some reorganizing on Sunday and tried going by size and actually managed to free up more space! I still kept authors together (and my Ireland and Tudors books as well) but other than that I put them by height and was able to fit more and make some room on shelves.

I am glad you still managed to group the authors; it really does seem to be the best option when one has completely run out of space!
