Last week I took an inventory of all the physical books that I own. I came up with over 600! I haven’t even read half of them and yet I continue to buy more books. So I decided to challenge myself in 2016 to concentrate on reading the books I already own. Then I thought, I can’t be the only one who has a surplus of unread books that they own so I decided to open up the challenge to anyone who wants to join in!
The rules are simple:
- Count up your unread books (whether physical, Kindle, ebook, audiobook, etc) and decide on how many you of those books you want to read in 2016. You can make a list and include that in your sign-up post or you can just include the number. I chose to create a page on my blog that has my entire physical book collection with the titles read bolded to help me keep track.
- Create your sign-up post with your total number unread and the number that you want to accomplish reading in 2016 and link to it below. Sign-ups are open until January 10 @ 9 am CST.
- When (if) you do your monthly review posts, add a line to show your progress and link up your posts to my 2016 RMHLC monthly update posts.
- Optional: As you’re reading books for this challenge, feel free to use the hashtag #2016readmybooks on Twitter and Instagram to share the books you are reading.
That’s it! Pretty simple, right?! No need for a set TBR list. You have the freedom to choose which books of yours you want to read. And the best part…. As you link your posts (sign-ups and each monthly link) I will add your name to a jar for an International giveaway at the end of the year for $30 USD to Book Depository as long as BD ships to your country. So if you participate by signing up and then link up every month, you have 13 chances to win!

I do not have a Twitter though….and obviously don’t use our account on Instagram for bookish stuff….can I use the hashtag here? HAHAHA, not that I will win the gift card. Still want to try though!

The hash tag is just for fun. The giveaway entries are if you do a monthly review post and add in how many books you’ve read towards the challenge. If you don’t normally do a monthly review post you could include the update on a monthly book haul post or any other recap type post and link it to that months link up post I will do towards the end of each month.

This is a really good idea! I am terrible about reading books I’ve had forever. I’m going to definitely consider doing this after I take a book inventory. Mine will be all eBooks, but still it would be nice to make myself read some of them before buying any more!

Thanks! I didn’t include ebooks in my own challenge because I just have SO many I haven’t read lol. I’m glad you’re considering joining up! 🙂

Fun! I’m definitely focusing more and more on my unread but owned books, and will try to continue in 2016! I’m not a challenge person in general, but I’ll consider this one. 🙂 Have fun, and good luck!

Love this idea! i have around 75?? Unread books and I’m getting more for Christmas so this would be a really good way to read all of my unread books! I’ve had some on my shelf for like, over a year! Definitely interested in taking part! 😀
I usually set myself a goodreads reading challenge anyway so I might use the same number for this one.
Still deciding though depending how much free time I have to read.

Thanks! I hope you decide to join in. Super low pressure, read as many as you want. Doesn’t even have to be the same number as your Goodreads challenge. I set mine as less than what I plan to set for my Goodreads challenge.

I’ve always done Adam’s TBR challenge at Roof Beam Reader, but he’s not hosting it in 2016. I’ve been scouring the interwebs for a new challenge and I should’ve just looked in my feed the whole time! I’ll be signing up!!!
